¡El Tour was started in 2000 by a group of good friends — and at the very beginning that is exactly what it was: the first tour was ridden in the Yucatán by friends from Basil's fitness centre back in Ontario. The first season with a published schedule had exactly two riders. Over 23 seasons it grew into 116 guided bicycle tours across the Pacific coast, the Sierra Madre mountains, the Yucatán peninsula and the southern states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Oaxaca — 399 riders in the first thirteen seasons alone, many of them returning again and again. This page lists every tour that left a record, season by season, exactly as they were offered at the time; the earliest seasons are reconstructed from the company's client database and its oldest surviving price list. Prices shown are that year's figures — see Costs for how prices evolved over the years.
Before there was a season there was a trip. ¡El Tour's first tour ran in the Yucatán in 2000, organised and guided with Pat Alati and Joel, and ridden by a group of friends from Basil's fitness centre in Woodbridge, Ontario. It left no paper trail at all — no web page, no entry in the client database — and is recorded here from Basil's own account, backed by what Pat wrote in the guestbook a year later. The tour that started the company. Ridden in the Yucatán in 2000 by a group of friends from Basil's fitness centre in Woodbridge, Ontario, it was organised and guided with Pat Alati — the friend whose own bicycle touring had drawn Basil into it, and who talked him into making a business of it — and with Joel, who came along to guide as well, being Mexican and far better versed in local customs.

The first season with a schedule, and the smallest: two tours, one rider on each. No web pages survive from it — the dates below come from Basil's own photographs of the trips, and the riders from the company client database. He met Peter in Puerto Vallarta on 25 November 2000 and rode the Pacific coast to Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas; a day later he met Abner in Zihuatanejo and carried on down to Puerto Escondido, reaching it on 19 December. Both men wrote in the guestbook of the original site the following year, and Abner came back for a second tour — ¡El Tour's first repeat rider. That February, Basil and Joel rode out of San Cristóbal together to look for new routes (see how we found the routes). From this seed grew twenty seasons of touring.

Reconstructed from eltour.itgo.com, the company's original website before it moved to bikemexico.com — recovered from the Wayback Machine. Real dates, distances, routes and full day-by-day itineraries survive for all five tours offered that season, plus the site's original guestbook (see the Reviews page). The client database shows who actually rode: Yucatán's Beaches & Ruins sold out and ran twice; Views of the Pacific and the brand-new Other Yucatán were advertised but drew no signups. Basil put the empty November to use, exploring the highlands from Valle de Bravo down to Zihuatanejo — the ride that became Mountains & Natural Wonders the next season (see how we found the routes).

As we meander along the quiet roads of the rolling foot hills of the Sierra Madres, the ocean crashes onto beaches 200 metres below with a backdrop of dazzling mountains and forests. We will see volcanos, geothermal vents, the migration of the monarch butterfly, pine forests, colonial towns and more. We'll even visit the marble-paved streets of the birth village of the last Aztec emperor. The long one. On this CHALLENGE difficulty tour we cover about 1300km in 3½ weeks from Cancun to San Cristóbal, Chiapas. We start with easy spinning along very flat terrain, gradually moving on to rolling countryside and finally climbing to 2200m in the midst of the exhilarating Sierra Madres of Chiapas. Highlights include Caribbean beaches, caves and cenotes, Mayan ruins, cArNaVaL, small friendly villages, colonial cities and enchanting mountains. A cenote is a sinkhole that accesses the immense underground river system of the Yucatan. Each one is spectacular but different from the one before.

On this REGULAR - CHALLENGE difficulty tour we cycle around the highlands of Michoacan state. We range in altitude from 1500m to 2500m so the weather is cool. We'll explore colonial cities, indigenous Purepecha towns, the newest volcano in the world, the avocado capital of the world and some spectacular mountain country-side. There are lakes, colourful markets, and interesting history and culture. For this tour, we meet up in Morelia and are transported to Carapán, a convenient starting point to cycle a loop that eventually takes us back to Morelia.

This extreme CHALLENGE difficulty tour in the state of Oaxaca starts and ends in Oaxaca city. The route to the coast will take us through a major Mexican pilgrimage destination, Juquila. People come from all over Mexico by foot, bicycle and motorized vehicle. After a brief stay on the coast in the surfer town of Pto. Escondido we head back into the hills and mountains to loop back to Oaxaca. This area is rich in indigenous culture, mainly Mixtec and also Triqui. We end the ride along an ancient trading route winding it's way along the top of a high ridge.

This extreme challenge difficulty and extremely popular tour in the state of Oaxaca starts and ends in Oaxaca city. The route to the coast will take us through a major Mexican pilgrimage destination, Juquila. People come from all over Mexico by foot, bicycle and motorized vehicle. After a brief stay on the coast in the surfer town of Pto. Escondido we head back into the hills and mountains to loop back to Oaxaca. The mountain scenery here is absolutely spectacular. This area is rich in indigenous culture, mainly Mixtec, Triqui and Amuzgos. We end the ride along an ancient trading route winding it's way along the top of a high ridge.
